Ilsa cries. Rick stops her and warns that Victor is looking at her, by calling “kid”.

Rick belittles their situation, comparing it to a hill of beans in the whole world.

Rick then says that he has a job to do and she cannot be a part of it.

Ilsa tries to explain what she has meant by promising to never leave Rick. He interrupts her and finishes the line by saying that she will never do.

Ilsa asks about their relationships. Rick answers that they will always have Paris. He says that they have lost it until the night when they talked.

Ilsa understands the trick and asks, if Rick is saying that to make her go. He responds that inside they both know, that she belongs with Victor, that she is a part of his work.

Rick explains the negative consequences, if they stay together, and asks Captain, by calling him “Louis”, to prove his opinion. Captain agrees.

Ilsa protests. Rick insists by saying “Listen to me.”

Rick says that Ilsa should go where she belongs.

Ilsa disagrees to leave Rick. Rick reminds her that she has wanted him to do the thinking for both of them. He’s done it.

Rick says that he will stay at the airport with Captain until the plane gets safely away.

Rick explains Ilsa that she will fly on the plane. Ilsa asks about him.

Ilsa asks Rick about the reason for her name on the form, be calling him “Richard”.

Rick calls the names for the form: Mr. and Mrs. Laszlo

Rick asks Captain to fill in the names in the form. Captain says that Rick thinks about everything.

Rick asks Captain to take care of Victor Laszlo’s luggage. Captain commands and Victor Laszlo leaves.

When they get off the car with Captain Renault and his subordinate, Rick calls Captain “Louis” and his subordinate “your man”.

Rick and Ilsa are approaching the airport by car.

It is done to persuade Ilsa that there is not much to worry about.

This is the final statement in their dialogue. There cannot be tears, because Rick doesn’t want Victor to know about him and Ilsa. Her present is Victor. By calling Ilsa “kid”, he shows his parental feelings, his support and care.

Here is a reference to the previous statement about where Ilsa belongs. She cannot be a part of Rick’s job, their ways split.

The leading line is strong here. No matter what Ilsa has meant, it is not important, because Rick puts his opinion forward. And it is to remember her.

It is another flashback that the writers use but, in contrast, it is filled with romance. Rick cherishes his memories about Paris. Both flashbacks are connected to the same night that questions Rick’s real feelings.

The writers combine two ends of the dialogue by returning to the word “belong”. Firstly, it is used to separate the characters. Now the writers show where exactly Ilsa belongs. From now Ilsa agrees with Rick.

There is a hint that Captain will support Rick as a friend, so the argument that Rick provides is not necessarily strong.

There is a contrast between Ilsa, who pulls herself and Rick to the unknown future, and Rick, who is certain about his actions and life without Ilsa. The gap between them is getting larger.

The idea of separation is getting bigger.

This flashback illustrates how painful Rick’s memories have been, but he is not a victim in this story anymore. This scene explains why Rick is keeping the whole situation under control: if he doesn’t, he will be a victim again.

It is shown again that Rick trusts Captain Renault. This friendship line is getting stronger and arises troubles for Rick’s and Captain’s future.

This trick of asking an additional question is used to emphasize the separation between the characters.

The writers use Ilsa’s question to initiate the dialogue. The use of Rick’s given name expresses Ilsa’s worries.

There is a clue that Rick and Ilsa’s dialogue will be about their separation.

The writers follow the line of Rick knowing what to do.

The writers eliminate Victor Laszlo to play out a subplot between Rick and Ilsa. By going to the subplot, the writers give Rick time to clarify their further steps to Ilsa.

In this scene the writers create a line that Rick keeps the situation under control. They use it to create tension: Rick will either become a hero or his trust in Captain Renault may be erroneous.
